COSTUME & MASK MAKING FOR THE SOUND SESSION PARADE!

The centerpiece of Providence Sound Session is the extraordinarily colorful nighttime parade that winds its way through Providence’s downcity neighborhood.

This ritual is inspired by the cultural traditions of Carnival celebrated in such places as Brazil, Trinidad and New Orleans, where floats loaded with elaborately costumed revelers take “the stage,” so to speak, to display the fruits of their year-long labors. Each group has taken great care to produce imaginative and spectacular costumes for their yearly performance, competing for prizes and public recognition.

This year Black’s Mas Camp Managers and a team of designers will work with Xxodus Café patrons and community members to celebrate the tradition of Masquerade Camp (costume and mask making) throughout the month of July. Our theme for this year is Divine Providence.

WE WELCOME YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PARADE BY SUPPORTING OUR MASQUERADE CAMP!

CREATE YOUR OWN MAS CAMP!

We also encourage groups or neighborhoods to create their own “Mas Camps.” Get together with friends or family, create a theme that expresses your collective identity and design a costume to wear together during the parade on July 21st.

The parade will be held on July 21, 2007. The procession begins at Waterplace Park at approximately 10pm. We welcome everyone to perform or just walk in our parade with or without a costume.
